I giocattoli devono rispettare i requisiti della Direttiva 2009/48/CE del Parlamento europeo e del Consiglio del 18 giugno 2009 sulla sicurezza dei giocattoli (GU L 170/1 del 30.6.2009) e devono riportare la marcatura CE.

La Commissione e il gruppo di esperti sulla sicurezza dei giocattoli elaborano documenti di orientamento per assistere i produttori, gli importatori, i distributori e le autorità pubbliche nell'interpretazione e nell'applicazione della direttiva sulla sicurezza dei giocattoli 2009/48/CE. I documenti di orientamento non sono giuridicamente vincolanti ma esprimono il punto di vista della maggioranza dei membri del gruppo di esperti.
