Sampling procedures for inspection by attributes - Part 1: Sampling schemes indexed by acceptance quality limit (AQL) for lot-by-lot inspection
(Edition 3, 2026) / 22.01.2026
This document specifies an acceptance sampling system of single, double, and multiple sampling plans for inspection by attributes.
This document specifies sampling schemes indexed by acceptance quality limit (AQL) for inspection by attributes.
Its purpose is to incentivize the producer through the economic and psychological pressure of lot non-acceptance to maintain a process average at least as good as the specified acceptance quality limit, while at the same time providing an upper limit for the risk to the consumer of accepting the occasional poor lot.
Sampling schemes designated in this document are applicable, but not limited, to inspection of items, such as complete products, sub-assemblies or individual components, operations, materials in process, supplies in storage, maintenance operations, data or records, and administrative procedures.
________
What is ISO 2859-1:2026 on sampling procedures for inspection by attributes?
ISO 2859-1:2026 is the international standard that defines a system of acceptance sampling plans for inspection by attributes. It enables organizations to assess the quality of products or processes based on sample-based inspections - whether you're checking manufactured components, maintenance records, or administrative procedures.
This third edition introduces skip-lot sampling procedures, updated guidance for applying sampling strategies, and replaces the previous edition from 1999 along with its amendments. It works best when used alongside ISO 2859-0 for illustrative examples and provides everything needed to define AQL-indexed single, double, or multiple sampling schemes.
Why is ISO 2859-1 important?
Sampling inspection is essential for balancing quality assurance with efficiency. Instead of checking every item in a lot, ISO 2859-1 provides statistically robust sampling methods that help organizations:
- Detect quality deterioration early
- Reduce inspection effort for consistently high-performing suppliers
- Maintain trust with stakeholders through internationally accepted quality control methods
The standard also offers incentives for good quality (e.g. reduced inspection or skip-lot inspection) and safeguards for consumers (e.g. switching to tightened inspection if issues are found).
Benefits
- Standardizes lot-by-lot inspection for products, services, and processes
- Balances risk and efficiency with robust AQL-based sampling schemes
- Includes skip-lot and switching rules to optimize inspection efforts
- Supports continuous improvement in production and quality management
- Helps align teams with statistical best practices through clear guidance and examples
